about

The Hooker McHugh tells the story of the 5th September 2009, when the gleoiteóg ‘McHugh’ set sail at approximately 09.05hrs. from Kinvara in Galway Bay bound for Rossaveel in Galway Bay. Having sailed approximately five nautical miles from the mouth of Kinvara Bay, the boat was hit by a strong gust of wind, started taking on water, capsized and sank rapidly. The two crew were taken from the water by the crew of another boat in company with them. The Shannon Coast Guard Helicopter and the Galway Inshore Lifeboat attended. There was one fatality, Mr. Johnny Mac Donncha, from the crew of the ‘McHugh’.

Written and Produced by Paul Higham & Sean Wood & featuring India Shan Merrett & Dave Mull.

lyrics

The Hooker McHugh set sail at nine, on a grand and mighty day,
But the gannets fell in a distant swell, and gave the game away.
Johnny Sheain Jeaic and Josie too pushed into the mouth of a squall
Josie came back, but poor Johnny Mac, was drowned and lost to us all.

In and out of Galway Bay
For a hundred years or more
She proudly rattled in full sail
With good men aft and fore
Until on that September day
Just Five miles from the shore
Carna’s finest hooker was sent
To the Ocean floor

Clinker built and stout of mast, her canvas sails stood all blasts
Until that day, in Galway Bay, when fate had other plans
They hadn’t sailed too far from home, both were thrown into the foam
The Blath na hOige had tacked around to lend a helping hand

The Mairtins and O'Culains brave, with Gerry Folan fought the waves
Risking life, and all their strength, to bring those brothers back
The sea will show a sailor light, when all around is dark as night
In a blink of an eye many lives were changed, and the skies above turned black.

Johnny Mac was a man of the sea, a friend to all he knew
A lover of our native tongue and a singer matched by few
He left behind four daughters fair, his treasured wife and lad
And a thousand cherished memories of that final Cruinniú na mBád
